Kitty corner...Create More Space

How does the old wives tale go? Placing furniture kitty corner, caddy corner, diagonally or at an angle is a waste of space and takes up more room.No matter how you say it, you will be surprised toknow how much more space you are actually creating when angling furniture in a room… you have to try it to believe it!

Factual Findings on Angles

The fact of the matter is a room must have at least one piece placed on the diagonal to create a visual interest and gravity to pull you into the room.

Positioning a sofa away from the wall at an angle creates more space behind it opening up an area to place a table, floor lamp or plant will actually add another dimension to the room.

Angling a tall cabinet in a corner will show off its best side, the front instead of seeing it from the side as you enter the room. Placing the cabinet snug in the corner will also add to the continuous flow of the room visually without the sharp perpendicular lines that furniture against the walls creates which has a tendency to stop your eyes in it their tracks.

Arranging most of the furniture in the room at an angle, providing the space permits it will open up the traffic flow and the room will appear more spacious.

If space is limited, you can still create that harmonic flow by just a simple turn of an end table or the twist of an occasional chair.

In the bedroom what a stir, you will create to the room by angling the bed from a corner. The bed becomes a focal point of the room, which is the whole reason why we call it, “The Bedroom”. The space behind it is an opportunity to create some romantic ambiance to the room with a table filled with scented candles.

One diagonal that is obvious but never done is the dining table and chairs. You will break up all the right angles in the room with the china cabinet and buffet placed against the wall. The traffic flow is re-directed and you are no longer walking around the table to get to the doorways.
